Engineering academics selected for SUNRISE programme

Two senior lecturers from Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Faculty of Engineering have been selected for the 2025 SUNRISE programme. Now in its second year, the SUNRISE (Stellenbosch University Research & Innovation Strategic Excellence Programme) initiative is designed to support and cultivate high-performing, mid-career academic staff, preparing them for future leadership roles within academia.

Dr Jamie Cripwell, from the Department of Chemical Engineering, focuses on separations technology and machine learning while Dr Makoena Sebatjane, a senior lecturer in the Department of Industrial Engineering, specialises in operations and supply chain management. Their inclusion in the programme recognises their expertise and contributions to research and academic development. Dr Sebatjane emphasises the programme’s value for professional growth: “The SUNRISE programme is an opportunity to learn from experienced academics who have been in the field for years. Their insights will be invaluable in supporting my professional growth.”

SUNRISE, an internal programme at SU, aligns with the national Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Future Professors Programme (FPP). It aims to develop the next generation of academic leaders, particularly as many senior and research-productive professors approach retirement. The programme provides selected fellows with mentorship, professional development opportunities, and research-focused support, fostering a strong academic community across faculties and disciplines. It forms part of SU’s broader vision to be a leading, research-intensive institution that promotes diversity and academic excellence.

Dr Sebatjane also looks forward to engaging with academics from other disciplines: “I am eager to connect with colleagues at similar career stages, exchanging ideas and learning from their approaches to research and teaching. This collaborative environment will enhance my academic practices.”

Dr Cripwell expresses his appreciation for being included in the programme. “I look forward to collaborating with scholars who are contributing to the future of academia at Stellenbosch University. This programme offers a platform to strengthen our academic community and contribute to its development.”

The Faculty of Engineering was also represented in the inaugural 2024 cohort, with Dr Nhati Gule (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and Dr Algurnon van Rooyen (Department of Civil Engineering) selected for the programme last year. Their participation underscores the Faculty’s commitment to academic excellence and leadership development.
